Oklahoma Climbing Team and Collegiate Climbing

We don’t post as often as we should but just wanted to provide a few updates on how things have been going on the Oklahoma Climbing Team.

This 2017/2018 season has been one of our best seasons ever if only because of our amazing group of athletes, parents, and the motivation that surrounds climbing right now. We took a huge step this season in accepting and supporting the OU Climbing Team under the umbrella of the Oklahoma Climbing Team Association.

The OU Climbing Team came to fruition through the combined efforts of a small group of people, most notably, Nate Richbourg, a senior at OU, who was heading up the Oklahoma Climbing Club and wanted to see a team started. Momentum picked up and within a few weeks the team was started. Practices began in September 2017 and quickly we had a team of 20. In the Spring of 2018 the team attended several collegiate competitions and then went to Regionals in March. The team placed 4th overall at regionals, we a few placing in top positions. Several on the team qualified for Nationals. At Nationals we had a good showing and one of our team members placed 2nd in Speed climbing and 6th in Sport climbing! His performance earned him a spot on the USA National Climbing Team and he will go on to compete internationally.

All of this just goes to show that there is real potential for progressing to international and even Olympic level events in competitive climbing right here in Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Climbing Team will continue to focus on fostering youth climbing both indoors and outdoors and support the goals of climbers that yearn to go far.

We are looking forward to Youth Sport Regionals in a couple of weeks and to competitions beyond.

Gearing up for 2017-2018 season

We have completed tryouts for the Oklahoma Climbing Team and are gearing up for the 2017-2018 season beginning with Bouldering. We are lucky in that once again our home gym of Climb Up is the venue for the Regional Championships!

We have some new team members that we need to work closely with to get up to speed along with our “seasoned” climbers that continue to develop into stronger and more proficient climbers.

Practice begins on September 12!

Summer practice

As June begins we end the 2016-2017 regular season and wish good luck to our team members going on to Divisionals and maybe Nationals!

We have begun the Summer practice schedule which will continue through June and July. August is an off-month for the team but we will hold tryouts for prospective team members on Sunday, August 27.

Declan climbingThe 2016/2017 climbing team season is about to begin and we are excited to announce a number of new additions. We have expanded our practice locations to OKC with the addition of Climb Up OKC at the silos. With that we have new team members and new coaches. We’ve added new team members to Tulsa and two new coaches and we’ve also added several climbers to the Norman branch.

Every day except for Saturday an Oklahoma Climbing Team members will be practicing somewhere in the state!

We have an anticipated 40 team members and 10 coaches.

In addition we are ramping up to add an Oklahoma collegiate climbing team collective (OCCTC) which will include students from different Colleges and Universities around Oklahoma practicing together. The details are still being hammered out but we expect to announce it soon.

The competition schedule for the South Central region is stacked with competitions this Bouldering season – by the looks of it, someone could attend a competition nearly every weekend. The final cool thing we’ll is that Climb Up in Norman will be hosting USA Climbing Bouldering Regionals this December.

We are really looking forward to diving into this packed season. It’s great to see so many young people getting the opportunity to experience climbing here in Oklahoma.

Climbing in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo!

olympics2020We are excited to announce that sport climbing has been accepted to the 2020 Olympic games in Tokyo. This is a huge step for the sport of climbing and the Olympics. A lot of details are still to be decided in terms of the venue, the team, training, etc. The International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC), a key player in getting climbing accepted as an Olympic sport, states, “The selection process will be drafted and presented on March 11, 2017, at the IFSC Plenary Assembly in Quebec City.”

In their press statement the IFSC’s President Marco Scolaris says, “The Olympics have been our dream for quite some time, and now the hard work has finally paid off. We would like to thank the IOC for extending a truly unique opportunity to our sport.”

Here at the Oklahoma Climbing Team Association this is a step in the direction of our dream to have local Oklahoma climbers advance to an Olympic level. If you look at the history of sport in our state you will see that there is a lot of talent across multiple types of sports and it is highly possible that, given the right conditions, and with enough work, someone’s future goal of being a gold medal climber can now be realized.

We are continuing to develop our program, work with experts in coaching, sports training, sports psychology and experienced competitive climbers who are passionate about teaching young people about climbing.

The 2016/2017 season holds great promise for the team as we add more talented coaches and more training facilities. We are looking forward to great things for the future of climbing both in our state and beyond.
